Why this port matters
Cinque Terre is one of those places the photograph does not prepare you for. To see Vernazza's harbor from the trail above, or Manarola at dusk, is genuinely to discover a beauty that exists nowhere else. Twelve hours ashore — your longest port day — also unlocks Pisa and even Lucca as realistic add-ons.
Brief history
Five villages clinging to terraced cliffs on the Ligurian coast — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore — settled in the early medieval period and isolated until the coastal railway arrived in 1874. UNESCO World Heritage since 1997, protecting the stone-walled terraces still actively farmed for wine and olives.

Timing note
Twelve hours (8:00 AM – 8:00 PM) is the sweet spot. Suggested plan: early train to Vernazza, ferry to Manarola for lunch, walk Via dell'Amore, train back via Riomaggiore, late afternoon in Portovenere — back at the ship by 7:00 with a glass of Vermentino in hand.
