I put this sailing together because I ran the numbers on where totality would actually be visible on August 12, 2026, and a beach chair in Mallorca wasn't the safe bet everyone assumed it was.

That became Total Eclipse of the Med: my Virgin Voyages eclipse cruise 2026 aboard Scarlet Lady, August 10 to 22, 2026, Barcelona to Rome, with one very specific day at sea when we chase totality instead of hoping we get lucky.

The itinerary, day by day

12 nights. 13 days. 8 ports. 1 eclipse.

• Day 1, Aug 10: Barcelona. Board and depart at 6pm.
• Day 2, Aug 11: Palma de Mallorca. Ashore roughly 8am to 6pm. Worth knowing: Palma sits inside the path of totality, which is exactly why so many land-based eclipse chasers are heading there, and exactly why I'm telling you not to be one of them.
• Day 3, Aug 12: Totality at Sea. The Zenith Event. Full day at sea, positioned for the eclipse.
• Day 4, Aug 13: Ibiza. Ashore roughly 8am to 5pm.
• Day 5, Aug 14: Day at sea.
• Day 6, Aug 15: Cannes. Ashore roughly 8am to 8pm.
• Day 7, Aug 16: Ajaccio, Corsica. Ashore roughly 8am to 5pm.
• Day 8, Aug 17: La Spezia, gateway to Cinque Terre. Ashore roughly 8am to 8pm.
• Day 9, Aug 18: Day at sea.
• Day 10, Aug 19: Amalfi Coast via Salerno. Ashore roughly 7:30am to 6pm.
• Day 11, Aug 20: Catania, Sicily. Ashore roughly 9am to 8pm.
• Day 12, Aug 21: Day at sea.
• Day 13, Aug 22: Rome via Civitavecchia. Ship arrives around 6:30am, disembarkation follows.

My advice on Rome: book extra nights after the cruise. August means the Vatican and Colosseum sell out days ahead, and your only shot at St. Peter's shouldn't be a rushed morning before a flight home.

What it costs and how to book

There's no sticker price on this page. That's on purpose. Pricing moves with cabin category and demand, so I link straight to Virgin Voyages' own booking engine for live pricing and real-time availability rather than posting a number that's wrong by the time you read it.

Cabin categories range from Insider (interior, 105 to 177 square feet) up to the Mega RockStar Suites (up to 2,147 square feet, with sub-categories like the Massive, the Fab, the Posh, and the Cheeky Corner, because Virgin Voyages does not believe in boring room names).

What I can do that the booking engine can't: hold a cabin for you personally while you decide, walk you through which category actually fits how you travel, and answer the questions the website won't. Message me and I'll set it up.

Is there still availability

Eclipse day itself

The August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse cruise day, officially Totality at Sea, runs from morning to night. Astronomer talks. Observation areas topside with telescopes and binoculars. A celestial-themed dinner. A Celestial Dance Party once the sky's dark again.

The timeline: head topside to an open deck with a clear western view by around 7 to 7:30pm local time. First contact starts around 7:38pm. Maximum obscuration hits between 8:30 and 8:33pm. Sunset lands around 8:50pm.

There's no single reserved viewing deck and no ticket required. The whole ship goes topside for this one.

Eclipse glasses: what I actually recommend

I'll be straight with you instead of just repeating what's on the rest of the site. Virgin Voyages says every sailor gets ISO 12312-2 certified solar glasses. I also tell people to pack their own before the trip. Both are true, and I'm not going to pretend they aren't.

Distributing glasses across a full ship on eclipse day is a lot of moving parts. I'd rather you have a backup pair sitting in your cabin than be standing in a line at 7:30pm hoping the logistics go smoothly that day. Grab a couple extras for anyone in your group too.

Photography, without ruining the moment

A GorillaPod tripod for hands-free shots from the railing. Solar filter film, cut to fit your camera or phone lens, which is the only safe way to photograph the sun directly, including the edges of totality. Extra memory cards. A portable charger, because a dead phone at 8:30pm would be a special kind of heartbreak.

My honest advice: shoot sparingly. This lasts a few minutes. Get your shot, then put the phone down and actually watch it happen. And never look through a viewfinder, binoculars, or telescope without a solar filter on the lens, not even during totality itself.

One more thing: drones are banned onboard, confiscated at boarding and returned at the home port. Leave that idea at home.

What happens if it's cloudy

This is the real answer to why I put my clients on a ship instead of a land package. A hotel in Mallorca can't move. A ship can reposition in real time if conditions change, something no fixed viewing location on land can offer, printed eclipse package or not.

What's still being finalized

I'd rather tell you what isn't locked yet than pretend it is. Onboard programming, port timing, and shore excursions are all still subject to change at Virgin Voyages' discretion, which is standard for any sailing this far out. The dining menus on my site come from third-party sources since Virgin Voyages doesn't publish official downloadable menus, so treat those as a strong preview, not gospel. Ferry schedules and opening hours in port should get a same-day confirmation once we're actually there.
