Brief history
A modest fishing village until 1834, when an English aristocrat, stopped at the border by a cholera quarantine, wintered here, fell in love, and built a villa. Aristocratic Europe followed. The Cannes Film Festival, conceived in 1939 as a democratic answer to fascist-controlled Venice, finally launched in 1946.
